FORD FIESTA OWNERS CLUB

NOW.  I'D JUST LIKE TO SAY THANK YOU TO ANY ONE THAT IS ON THE SITE JUST NOW.  THIS SITE IS FOR ANY FORD FIESTA OWNERS THAT WANT TO TALK TO OTHER FIESTA OWNERS.  I WILL ALSO ACCEPT FORD KA OWNERS.  IF YOU WANT TO SAY ANYTHING ABOUT YOUR FORD FIESTA/KA PLEASE LEAVE IT IN THE "COMMENTS" BOX AT THE BOTTOM, THANKS.  HOWEVER IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WITH YOUR FORD FIESTA/KA THEN YOU CAN ALSO E-MAIL ME AT JMURRAY01@HOTMAIL.CO.UK.  THIS CAR ABOVE IS MINE, IT'S A FORD FIESTA MK4 GHIA.  IT HAS THE 4 CYLINDER, 1.25 LITRE, 75 BRAKE HORSE POWER PETROL ENGINE.  PLEASE LEAVE PICTURES OF YOUR FIESTA/KA, I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THEM.  THE MAIN REASON I OPENED THIS SITE IS SO THAT FIESTA/KA OWNERS CAN TALK TO EACH OTHER ABOUT THEIR CARS.  PLEASE BOOKMARK THIS SITE SO THAT YOU CAN GO ON TO IT AGAIN.  I'VE ALSO GOT A PC HELP SITE IF YOU WANT TO VIEW IT, IT'S PC-HELP.JIMDO.COM.  WELL THATS IT FOR THE INTRODUCTION.  JUST A REMINDER PLEASE LEAVE YOUR POSTS IN THE COMMENTS BOX.  THANK YOU.

RIGHT NOW, ENGINES.  THE MODEL WE WILL BE TALKING ABOUT TODAY IS THE MK4 GHIA.  BASICALLY BECAUSE IT'S THE ONE I KNOW MOST ABOUT AS IT'S THE MODEL I HAVE.  IT HAS A 16V 4 CYLINDER 75 BHP ZETEC S ENGINE.  IT WILL DO 0-60 MPH IN ABOUT 13 SECONDS.  THERE IS A 1.8 DIESEL VERSION AS WELL BUT THE 1.25 PETROL IS THE ONE TO GO FOR.  BEING A CAR ENTHUSIAST THERE ARE MANY REASONS I COULD TELL YOU FOR NOT BUYING A DIESEL FULL STOP.  CHIEF AMONG WHICH IS YOU GET NO POWER FOR AGES, AND THEN YOU GET SOME AND YOU HAVE TO CHANGE GEAR AND YOUR BACK TO SQUARE ONE.  NOT TO MENTION THE FACT THAT IF YOU RUN OUT OF DIESEL YOU CAN'T JUST FILL IT UP FROM A LITTLE CAN, YOU HAVE TO BLEED THE SYSTEM.  BUT THE REASON FOR NOT BUYING THE FIESTA IN A DIESEL IS WITH THE PETROL YOU GET A LOT MORE POWER AND IN TERMS OF ECONOMY THERES ONLY 5 MILES PER GALLON IN IT.  IN MANY WAYS THE 75 BHP ENGINE IS BRILLIANT BUT IF IT'S ACCELERATION YOU WANT BUY THE GHIA X.  IT'S GOT A FAR MORE SUITABLE 1.4 LITRE ENGINE THAT WILL DO 0-60 IN UNDER 10 SECONDS.  WE WILL TALK ABOUT THE MK1 SOME TIME SOON AFTER I DO SOME REVISION.

NOW, I'VE DONE MY RESEARCH AND I AM GOING TO TALK ABOUT THE FORD FIESTA MK1.  TO BE MORE SPECIFIC THE FIESTA 1300S.  IT'S GOT A 1,298CC ENGINE THAT PRODUCES AROUND 75 BHP.  THE MK1 1300S WAS RENOWNED FOR IT'S GOOD HANDLING AND STRONG ENGINE IN THE 80'S.  IF YOU LOOK AT THE FIRST PICTURE YOU WILL SEE THAT THE SPEEDOMETER ONLY GOES UP TO 100 MPH AND THAT IS BECAUSE WHEN THE CAR IS AT IT'S TOP SPEED OF AROUND 85 MPH ON THE GUAGE IT LOOKS LIKE IT'S GOING FASTER THAN YOU ARE.  IT'S STRANGE TO THINK THAT FORD'S ROAD GOING RALLY CAR THAT PEOPLE THOUGHT OF AS FAST IN THE 80'S IS NOW SLOWER THAN A FORD KA 1.  BUT I WOULD STILL HAVE THE FIESTA.  IT MIGHT BE SLOWER THAN A KA BUT THE 1300S FIESTA IS A CLASSIC AND THE KA ISN'T.  BE SURE TO LEAVE YOUR COMMENTS ON THIS ARTICLE IN THE BOX AT THE BOTTOM.  NOTICE THAT ON PICTURE 2 & 3 THIS VERSION HAS THE 1300S PAINT JOB.  WELL, MK3 NEXT.

NOW, THE MK3.  THIS IS THE GHIA MODEL WITH A 1600CC ENGINE THAT PRODUCES ABOUT 85 BHP.  IT'S ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL FIESTA'S OF THE 90'S.  FOR A 1994 CAR IT LOOKS QUITE MODERN.  YOU CAN GET A GOOD ONE THESE DAYS FOR ABOUT 500 - 650 POUNDS.  IF IT'S BELOW £500 BE SUSPICIOUS, THERE MAY BE SOMETHING THE SELLER ISN'T TELLING YOU.  BESIDES THE MK4 THE MK3 WAS ONE OF THE MOST RELIABLE FIESTA'S YOU CAN GET.  BACK TO THE BUYING ISSUE.  EVEN IF YOU FIND A MK3 FOR £650 THERE COULD STILL BE SOMETHING WRONG WITH IT.  EITHER SOMETHING THE SELLER KNOWS ABOUT OR NOT.  EVEN THOUGH I SAID THE MK3 WAS ONE OF THE MOST RELIABLE FIESTA'S THERE IS A FEW THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR IN BUYING A USED ONE.  THE FIRST THING TO LOOK OUT FOR IS HIGH OIL PRESSURE.  THIS CAN DAMAGE THE ENGINE.  ON VIEWING THE CAR YOU CAN OPEN THE OIL FILLER CAP WHEN THE ENGINE IS RUNNING AND IF THERE IS A LOUD HISSING SOUND THE CAR HAS HIGH OIL PRESSURE.  IF SO YOU CAN BUY THE CAR BUT BEWARE YOU MAY HAVE TO GET IT FIXED AT A LATER DATE.  IF YOU CAN'T DISTINGUISH A LOUD HISS TAKE IT FOR A TEST DRIVE.  THE SIGNS OF HIGH OIL PRESSURE ARE, JERKY ACCELERATION, LEAKING OIL (ONLY IF THE PRESSURE IS VERY HIGH), HIGH TICK-OVER REVS (IDLE REVS) AND A RATTLY SOUNDING ENGINE (YOU WILL BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY THIS BETTER IN A PETROL AS A DIESEL RATTLES AT THE BEST OF TIMES).  BASICALLY IF IT'S A PETROL AND IT SOUNDS LIKE A DIESEL YOU'VE GOT A PROBLEM.  THE OTHER THING IS THE CLUTCH.  IF IT STILL HAS THE ORIGINAL ONE IT IS MOST LIKELY TO HAVE A PROBLEM.  THE MAIN PROBLEM IS FOR THE CLUTCH TO BE HARD TO PRESS, THE OTHER ONE IS IT STICKING WHEN PRESSED.  ENOUGH BAD THINGS THOUGH.  IF YOU GET A GOOD ONE WITH ANYTHING UP TO 110000 MILES ON THE CLOCK YOU WILL HAVE IT FOR YEARS TO COME.  TO ME ANYWAY A PROPER FIESTA IS THE MK3 & 4.

TODAY WE WILL BE TALKING ABOUT SOME OF THE PROBLEMS YOU CAN GET.  NOT NECESSERILY IN A FIESTA OR KA BUT IN ANY CAR.  NOW WE ALL KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE TO GO OUT TO YOUR CAR ON A FROSTY MORNING AND GET NOTHING BUT A CLICKING NOISE FROM THE STARTER. THE BEST THING TO DO IS LEAVE IT FOR A FEW HOURS.  IF YOU ARE IN A RUSH OR THAT DOESN'T WORK YOUR OTHER OPTIONS ARE TO EITHER JUMP START IT OR GET A BATTERY BOOSTER.  EITHER OF THESE THINGS SHOULD WORK BUT IF THEY DON'T IT MAY BE SOMETHING MORE SERIOUS THAN A DEAD BATTERY.  I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THIS BUT I HEARD THAT IT'S BETTER TO START YOUR CAR WITH THE CLUTCH DEPRESSED AND IN 1ST.  THEY SAY IT'S BETTER FOR YOUR ENGINE.  THE MOST COMMON WAY OF STARTING A CAR IS IN NEUTRAL WITH NO PEDALS DEPRESSED, MAYBE IT CAUSES LESS FRICTION TO THE FLY WHEEL WITH THE CLUTCH PRESSED.  WELL THATS IT FOR TODAY.

RIGHT, TODAY'S ARTICLE IS ON FUEL.  MOST OF US KNOW IT'S BAD FOR YOUR ENGINE TO BE LOW ON FUEL.  DIESEL ENGINES COPE WITH IT BETTER THAN PETROL, BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN YOU CAN RUN IT INTO THE RED.  IF YOUR CAR DOES RUN INTO THE RED DON'T PANIC JUST TRY TO FIND A PETROL STATION.  NOW FILLING UP, TRY NOT TO FILL UP WHEN IT IS NOT NECESSARY (IE.  3 QUARTERS TO FULL) WAIT UNTIL IT GOES DOWN TO A QUARTER AS ADDING FUEL ADDS WEIGHT WHICH BRINGS DOWN YOUR MPG SO DON'T BE TOPPING UP ALL THE TIME.  THE IDEAL AMOUNT OF FUEL TO HAVE IN YOUR CAR DEPENDS ON THE BHP AND FUEL TYPE.  SO, 50 - 100 BHP (BRAKE HORSE POWER) PETROL 3 QUARTERS, THAT BHP WITH A DIESEL HALF A TANK.  100 - 200 BHP PETROL IN BETWEEN 3 QUARTERS AND FULL, THAT WITH A DEISEL 3 QUARTERS.  EFFICIENT DRIVING IS SOMETHING WE ALL SHOULD DO.  IT'S EASY REALLY, JUST STAY IN A HIGH GEAR AND DON'T FLOOR THE ACCELERATOR.  I HAVE TO ADMIT MY FIESTA IS LOW ON FUEL AT THE MOMENT BUT I WILL GET IT FILLED UP SOON.  WITH PETROL GOING PAST 105.9P PER LITRE WE SHOULD ALL BE WATCHING THE WAY WE DRIVE.  HAPPY AND EFFICIENT MOTORING!

NOW WE ALL DREAD THE DAY WHEN WE LOOK AT THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE AND IT IS IN THE "HOT" BAR.  THE MOST COMMON REASON FOR THIS IS THE ENGINE COOLANT RUNNING LOW.  YOU SHOULD ALWAYS CHECK YOUR ENGINE COOLANT ALONG WITH THE OTHER FLUIDS EVERY WEEK.  IF IT IS RUNNING LOW YOU CAN TOP IT UP.  BE SURE TO USE ANTI-FREEZE IN WITH THE WATER.  I WILL TRY AND GET A VIDEO OF HOW TO TOP UP ENGINE COOLANT.  REMEMBER IT COULD BE SOMETHING AS SMALL AS A BROKEN SENSOR OR A BROKEN GAUGE.  THOUGH IN SAYING THAT IT COULD BE SOMETHING AS SERIOUS AS A BROKEN RADIATOR.  IF IT IS YOU MIGHT HAVE A BIG GARAGE BILL ON YOUR HANDS.  BUT IF IT IS THE COOLANT THEN LET THE ENGINE COOL DOWN THEN TOP IT UP.

HELLO, WE ARE GOING TO TALK ABOUT TYRES TODAY.  HOW MANY OF YOU CHECK YOUR TYRE PRESSURE EVERY 2 WEEKS.  WELL RESULTS SHOW THAT ONLY 40% OF PEOPLE IN THE UK CHECK THEIR TYRES WHEN THEY SHOULD.  INFACT 10% OF US NEVER CHECK OUR TYRES AT ALL!  YOU CAN INFLATE YOUR TYRES AT MOST SERVICE STATIONS.  YOUR TYRE PRESSURES ARE EITHER IN THE OWNERS GUIDE OR ON THE SIDE OF THE DOOR.  IF EVERY ONE CHECKED THEIR TYRES PROPERY THERE WOULD BE LESS CRASHES DUE TO "BLOW OUTS" (FAST PUNCTURES).  SO AS THE WEATHER IS GETTING WORSE GIVE YOUR TYRES A CHECK.

THIS ARTICLE IS ON CLEANING YOUR CAR.  I KNOW BECAUSE IT'S WINTER PEOPLE ARE STOPPING CLEANING THEIR CARS.  OK, IT MIGHT BE A BIT COLDER OUTSIDE BUT DO YOU REALLY WANT YOUR CAR TO GET RUSTY AND THE PAINT TO FADE.  THAT IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOUR CAR DOESN'T GET WASHED.  ESPECIALLY IN THE COLD BECAUSE ICE DAMAGES AND FADES THE PAINT.  IN THE SUMMER YOU SHOULD CLEAN YOUR CAR EVERY WEEK TO KEEP IT IN GOOD ORDER AND IN THE WINTER IT'S NO DIFFERENT, INFACT IT'S EVEN MORE IMPORTANT.  I'M NOT SAYING GO OUT IN THE SNOW AND CLEAN YOUR CAR, BUT TRY AND GET IT CLEANED AT LEAST EVERY 2 WEEKS.

NOW, TODAY WE ARE GOING TO TALK ABOUT THE LITTLE GAUGE IN THE CORNER OF THE DASH THAT NOBODY REALLY PAYS ATTENTION TO.  FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT THESE NEXT FEW SENTENCES WILL BE BORING TO YOU.  IT'S CALLED THE REV COUNTER OR THE TACHOMETER.  THE NUMBERS AROUND IT ARE THE RPM.  RPM STANDS FOR REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE.  MOST STANDARD CARS HIT THE REV LIMITER AT ABOUT 6,000 RPM (THE 6 ON THE DIAL), DIESELS HIT IT AT ABOUT 4,000 - 5,500 RPM.  YOU SHOULD CHANGE GEAR AT ABOUT 3,500 RPM.  NOW I UNDERSTAND THAT MOST KA OWNERS WON'T HAVE A REV COUNTER.  SO YOU JUST HAVE TO GO BY THE SOUND OF THE ENGINE.  KEEPING YOUR REVS LOW SAVES FUEL.  SO THE NEXT TIME YOU GO OUT IN YOUR CAR PAY ATTENTION TO THE REV COUNTER.

NOW TODAY WE ARE GOING TO TALK ABOUT CAR MAINTENANCE.  THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR YOUR ENGINE IS OIL.  IT KEEPS ALL THE MOVING PARTS IN THE ENGINE LUBRICATED.  5W 30 IS THE STANDARD OIL FOR THE FORD FIESTA PETROL.  THE HIGHER THE VISCOSITY GRADE THE THICKER THE OIL.  AS I HAVE NEVER OWNED A FORD KA I AM UNABLE TO TELL KA OWNERS WHAT VISCOSITY GRADE OF OIL YOU WOULD NEED. PROBABLY 5W-30 WOULD DO BUT I WOULD CHECK. NEXT YOU SHOULD CHECK THE COOLANT.  IT SHOULD BE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MIN AND MAX MARKS.  IF IT IS LOW TOP IT UP WITH A MIXTURE OF WATER AND ANTI-FREEZE EVEN IN THE WARMER WEATHER.  AFTER THAT YOU SHOULD CHECK THE WINDSCREEN WASHER FLUID RESEVOIR.  YOU CAN TOP IT UP WITH WATER OR IDEALLY WITH PROPER WASHER FLUID.  THE TWO LAST THINGS TO CHECK ARE THE BRAKE/CLUTCH FLUID AND THE POWER STEERING FLUID.  AGAIN MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE SITTING IN BETWEEN THE MIN AND MAX MARKS.  THAT MAY  BE ALL YOU NEED TO DO UNDER THE BONNET BUT THERES MORE TO CHECK.  FIRST, THE TYRES.  CHECK THEY ARE NOT OVER OR UNDER FLATED.  THEN YOU SHOULD LOOK UNDERNEATH THE CAR AND SEE IF THERE IS ANY PUDDLES OF WATER OR OIL OF ANY KIND.  IF THERE IS YOU SHOULD CHECK THE FLUIDS AGAIN AND DRIVE TO A GARAGE IMMEDIATELY.  IF NOT, START THE ENGINE.  THERE SHOULD BE NO PETROL SMELLS OR SMOKE, HOWEVER IF YOU HAVE A DIESEL IT MAY SMOKE FOR A FEW MINUTES. ALSO CHECK FOR ANY SQUEAKS, RATTLES OR BANGS COMING FROM THE ENGINE.  YOU SHOULD FOLLOW THESE STEPS EVERY 2-3 WEEKS.

Just browsed you site and own a 1.4 ghia x 1997 with only 40k on clock. but am deciding on whetgher to change the cambelt or not.

Hate to rain on anyone's parade, but would you go bungee-jumping on a cord that's been in a cupboard for thirteen years? I sure as hell wouldn't! You can't always tell the true condition of a cam belt because, even though it might LOOK fine, its strength is actually chiefly in the cord-like nylon braid INSIDE it.It reinforces the belt in a manner not unlike the steel wire bands in a tyre, and you've probably seen how a stored tyre deteriorates. Teeth have been known to strip off, too. For what it costs,I would personally recommend a change every 50,000 miles or 4 years, whichever comes first;the resultant mess from not thinking about what you're otherwise up against is more than the car's worth,it's a load of unnecessary grief,no matter HOW good a job is done of the rebuild it'll never run quite the same again and you'll be kicking your own arse for years to come. Enlist the help of a good technician who knows his stuff,or better still learn to do it properly and safely yourself-and keep all the bills with the car.

actually ford say change the cambelt at 75k or every 10-11 years which ever comes first so it should have been changed 3 years ago

Thanks for clarifying that Jim,hopefully it will help many owners.I did a bit of digging and found that a belt is £20 to £25ish,or a kit with all suggested replaceable bits is about eighty quid from a motor factor. Two or three reputable garages in my area (Forest of Dean) quoted £200ish for the job,but I should imagine there are others around who'd charge less still.

    Gledi (Sunday, 31 January 2010 21:19)

Hi everybody,I have recently bought a Ghia of 99, with a 1.25 Zetec S. In its documents says that fuel consumption inside the city might be 9.3 l/100 km,but i think that my car has a greater consumption, 3-4 liters more. It has done nearly 1050000 km. Is it normal or sth goes wrong with it?

    Shag.E (Tuesday, 02 February 2010 18:40)

Jamie-what area do you live in?I may be able to point you to somewhere cheaper, but still high quality.Or does anyone else know of a good quality garage in Jamie's area? And Gledi, can't say for certain, but sounds like something one would pick up on a good service, though there are so many things that affect fuel consumption{e.g.tyre pressures, driving style, oil or fuel grade} but to be honest, recent weather conditions with that white stuff everywhere and journey length(bet they're short and in traffic)won't do any favours.Just like anyone else,I can't afford to throw money about, but a good oil flush and change with a new oil and air filter shouldn't break the bank, and will almost definitely make a difference to how it runs.

Just noticed your website and thought I'd have a look. I'm the still proud owner of a 1981 Mk1 Ford Fiesta Ghia. In all the years, it's only let me down once and that was with a leaking hose (I should have noticed, so it was my fault really). They're great little cars and I'll hate the day I have to change it.

    Shag.E (Monday, 15 February 2010 23:07)

Genuinely sorry to hear of your misfortune,Jamie-hope the pug gets well soon.Gavin-fairly certain all the mentioned wheels will fit;stud pattern should be the same, but you need to chech the rim width, how much "dish" (how far in or out the centre of the wheel is in comparison to the rim),and a fair amount of consideration needs to be given to tyres too.If the tread sticks out from under the arch it's an MOT failure, and you need to make sure that if you fit low profiles, the rolling circumference is the same as the originals. Talk to a good tyre company about Aspect Ratios-if they don't know what you're talking about,go elsewhere. The aspect ratio is the middle number in the size,e.g.the 70 in the tyre size 155/70R13.It's the height of the wall of the tyre as a percentage of it's width. It all gets a bit involved with Pi and other maths from hereonin,so your best bet is to try them on the car.A seler shouldn't mind, but don't forget to try lock to lock on the floor!
Rosy, learn to do as much as you can yourself and enlist the help of other reliable enthusiasts-we're all here to help each other-most of us are skint(me included) and the more we can do between ourselves the better off we will all be.
P.S; does anyone have the service settings for the CXT auto box?I'm having a Nat King Cole moment..."There may be trouble ahead..."

jtyler: Are the ignition lights on the dash going on ? It's 99.9% probably the battery.

podge.d: Look in the last pages of your owners manual and it will tell you in the "Technical" (or a similar term) section.

    Wayne (Thursday, 25 February 2010 23:19)

I have an intermittent starting problem with my 2002 (52 plate) Ford Fiesta. It tends to happen after the enginge is turned off. All of the lights on the dashboard go off - even the clock and the flashing immobilser symbol. The interior/exterior lights aren't affected - and the radio works too. When the ignition is turned, only the oil light and airbag sign show, and there's a single clicking noise from the fuse area - presumably a relay. After an hour or so - the dash lights come back on the and the car starts without problem. I've checked for loose connections around the fuse box - to no avail. This has been happening for about two days - I'm scared to do my shopping incase I get stranded :( I don't want to be ripped off by a garage and have contemplated by getting an Auto Electrician? Does anyone have any ideas before I spend my hard earned cash?

  • #18

    Shag.E (Friday, 26 February 2010 14:47)

Nice one Gavin, happy motoring! jtyler- I've come across this before and,as Jamie says,it's most likely a discharged battery.Given all the white gick that's been about, the battery has probably sounded the last post. However,if you go to a reputable starter centre, they should test it for free before you spend any cash.If the lights on the dash DON'T go dim when you turn the key,it's more likely to be a connection.Try checking the connections to the starter, and clean and tighten the ones on the battery itself, adding a THIN film of vaseline. It's rare that the switch itself is at fault,so the other possibility is a sticking pre-engager on the starter,or maybe a bare wire running to earth.
Wayne-I can only suggest a similar approach, though your problem does indeed sound like a relay, but it doesn't pay to jump to conclusions.I would personally be suspicious of any immobilising equipment on the car. When it happens again, try relocking and unlocking it,using the remote function if it has one,and see what difference it makes.Damp, salty winters make for crap electrical connections.
Podge.D-it's all in the handbook, but any Ford garage should tell you.Never be scared to ring or call in to ask them-the more they see your face, the better chance of a small discount when you buy from anywhere.I don't remember off the top of my head, but I think sump and filter(change it too)are ABOUT 4 litres-ish.Good luck, hope the Pug's ok Jamie.

By "i.i" I'm assuming you mean 1.1? And "refs" revs? Sorry but I just had to correct you on those things. Do you mean the whole body shudders ? If so it could be a transmission mount.

hi there was wondering if you could help me again i have a 1995 mark 3 1.6 16v fiesta si and it seems to be useing alot of fuel do you think there could be a problem or is this normal? thanks

  • #22

Jamie (site owner) (Wednesday, 24 March 2010 00:16)

Hi Gavin, besides the obvious, a leak the other obvious problem would be bad spark plugs. Does it show any struggling starting?

  • #23

    gavin (Thursday, 25 March 2010 01:19)

hi, theres no leak and it starts fine. just seems to use alot of fuel but im not sure if thats becuase i was used to haveing a 1.1 before this and that used hardly any fuel. i have to fill this one up every week where as my old car was once a month.
    thanks

    Polly (Thursday, 25 March 2010 16:11)

    I've just got my first ever car M reg Frascati, and I have NO idea what so ever... I can change spark plugs and that is about it. My family are no mechanical at all and I have trawled the internet trying to find out the following;
    1) Where the hell does the oil go? And what type of oil do I use? Everything is yellow and the only picture Ive deciphered is the window wash.
    2) What is the correct tyre pressure. As I have never filled a tyre before winging it seems a bit stupid.
If anyone could help I would be very greatful, though Ive only had my car a week, he is awesome, and I want to take good care of him.
    Please and thank you
    :) x

I've got a 2001 fiesta freestyle. My front fog lights seem to come on with my side and main lights and I can't turn them off, even if I push the button for them on the dashboard. Any ideas? I got pulled over by the police for having them on so really need to get it sorted.

hi ive got a 1997 1.25 fiesta and when i change gear the revs stay high?

  • #29

Jamie (site owner) (Friday, 02 April 2010 21:04)

@Wayne - Possibly it could be an ECU problem or a battery connection problem.

  • #30

    shag.e (Tuesday, 20 April 2010 14:41)

kylie-If I remember rightly your fog lights should turn off automatically when you turn your lights off and back on-try it and see. Polly-the oil cap is right on top of the engine itself and usually has a rubber pipe leading from it to a point underneath the grey or black frying-pan shaped affair at the back of the engine bay.Oil with 15w40 on the carton should do the trick.Best thing to do is to talk to a local garage that several mates recommend, they're always willing to help. And take a basic vehicle maintenance course at a local college,it will stand you in good stead and help you to spot if you're being ripped off.Tyres are 26 to 28 lb or about 2 bar(ish) under normal use.
Gavin-get your ignition timing checked(it's probably pre-set but a worn distributor, damaged crankshaft sensor or the like might show up),have your injectors cleaned (you can get the stuff from any motor factor),check the air filter is clean and see if you can get the air flow meter checked for balance.I'm presuming your car is fuel injected as I ain't played with an Si for years. Not much goes wrong with injection systems, but there's always the possibility that someone's played with it who doesn't know what they're doing.Oh,and if it's got an after-market big bore exhaust or silencer on it,it will disturb the fine balance between airflow into the inlet side and out of the exhaust.Start with the filter, though, and an injector clean.
Andy-where's the rattle from?Be as precise as you can e.g.engine bay passenger side, and also describe it,like "pebbles in a tin","clapping wet hands","gnome throwing chisels down a fire-escape" or the like.So much can rattle in this engine, though it's usually valve rockers not having been set since Thatcher was in power.

hi shag.e thanks for the help it did have a kand n air filter on it but i have just put the air box with a brand new air filter in to see if that makes a diffrents. far as i know everything else is standard the air folw meter looks new only had the car sence december. thanks again i will see if it helps.
one other thing if anyone has a tensioner for a 1995 fiesta si 1.6 16v i am looking for one but ford want a lot for it thanks.

  • #32

    shag.e (Monday, 26 April 2010 23:46)

Gavin-Any luck with fuel economy yet? If it's any help,I presume the tensioner you're after is for the timing belt, should all come as a kit and any good motor factor will be able to oblige. My local is GMF and they're excellent(south west and wales)but there are loads of good ones out there, and their advice and help is free and readily available.

    shag.e (Tuesday, 27 April 2010 00:03)

Jay-there are many conflicting views on lowering;Fast Ford and similar publications have spent decades in the analysis of the practice so a call to the enquiry desk or an e-mail is probably the best way forward. Your tyres, ride stiffness, geometry and intended use(e.g.road or track)will all be part of the consideration,as will your local council's choice of speed humps...ouch.Sorry for the delay!

Gavin-glad you had some success with economy, hope you tried injector cleaner too, usually works a treat.Just a thought,is the engine temp about right? An engine running excessively cool will keep the auto choke setting on.
Gordy-just a theory, but an air bubble in your cooling system has been known to give these symptoms, because air near the cold start sensor in the coolant changes the temp it cuts in and out at,giving a rich mix for a few seconds. This might tie in nicely with the heater going cold if your coolant level is low.I'd start by checking for signs of coolant loss and top the system up with warm coolant with the engine running at normal temp.Don't forget to observe all health and safety appropriate for the job,and wear safety goggles, gloves and an asbestos body suit.I always enlist the help of a grown-up for jobs like this.ANd I can tie my own shoelaces, and EVERYTHING....

    steee (Tuesday, 08 June 2010 03:14)

Hi just found this site and thought you might be able to help...I have a Fiesta Mk3.5 on a m plate, I have a problem with lights flickering, I recently had a problem with my LHS headlight been messed up . headlight was flashing instead of indicator. indicator came on instead of high beam etc etc ..... i traced this problem to the indicator stalks and fitted a new one. now all the lights flicker but work correctly except I have no main beam on lhs.and all the lights are flickering now.

I have checked the bulb is ok tried to check earths but can only find the main one off the battery and a smaller earth mid way along the lhs front wing.

I believe there should be a earthing point up near the head lights but i cant find it...

I know this can be due to the alternator going wonkey but due to the headlight issue I'm hoping its just a bad earth and not a new alt required

    Shag.E (Monday, 14 June 2010 19:16)

Hi,Gavin old chap. That bit of info turns things around a bit.If you contact any motor factor, they will be able to supply you with a bottle of stuff you chuck in the fuel tank to clean your injectors, usually makes a noticable difference. As for the temp,if it's not rising too high, all well and good. If,on the other hand, you can hit a pheasant and it's cooked before it's passed the radiator, you might want to change the thermostat.Sounds like the fuel consumption's about at it's best by now,but a good oil flush and change with a new oil filter is always a worthwhile investment. If there's anything untoward like scum on the oil filler cap,get back to me.
Steee-is it a regular dimming,or an intermittent problem?A dodgy alt will give the effect of a candle in a draught.I'll take a guess that it's got extra-high output bulbs-can you let me know? Not sure if you have different fuses in your model for each side main beam, but the thing that occurs to me is that you may have an overcharge from your alternator.Worth going to an auto electrician for a quick diagnosis of the regulator, especially if there's a funny eggy smell from the battery- that'll be gas from overcharging, and can be explosive.......

Zena-have a chat with your local motor factor, not sure if LMC HADRIAN or VENG might make a repro panel and the factor would be the place to order it for you.Failing that,Ford may be able to locate a genuine old stock part,or try some of the specialists in a magazine like RETRO FORD.Let us know how you get on!

    been changed, any ideas?

  • #52

    John (Friday, 16 July 2010 22:48)

Hey Gordon,I fixed mine.It had a problem with the valve that blocks the circulation of hot water inside the cabin(behind the fans).Check it out because it might be the same. There are two couples of rubber tubes.A couple that enters in the cabin, and the other near the engine and all the other stuff. The valve is at a plastic structure where these two couple of tubes are joint.
After detaching the tubes(But not the power supply) try to blow at the hole which is near a little metallic cylinder(this is where hot water goes in).If you have set it to HOT the air must pass,if you have set it to COLD,it mustn't.I hope that my explanation was clear and useful

Hi all as a huge Fiesta fan i'd though i'd post a little advise, i had a 2000 (w) fiesta Zetec 1.25, 16v, in state blue, and it was puka :) was so zippy to drive and humbled bigger cars when i was a wee tear away, 2 Years ago i brought a Brand new fiesta Zetec 1.25 16v and frankly I was unimpressed with the performance and fuek consumption, the car is much heavier, so mu advise if your looking at new fiesta is get one of the diesel or the 1.4, I've now changed my fiesta to a new S1600 and it's the DB!!! :) Fiesta rule.

    Robert (Tuesday, 21 December 2010 18:33)

This is a nice site! I just purchased at 94 Fiesta 1.4 and noticed it's burning fuel like crazy! The car runs like a champ. I also have a squeaking noise on the inside that sounds like it's coming from passenger side. Any idea on my problems? Thanks

  • #69

Jamie (Site Owner) (Sunday, 02 January 2011 19:35)

    Thank you Robert!

As for your question; the cause could be a rich running engine. Is it a carburettor ?

Sometimes a rich running engine will sound like it is running as smooth as silk, but it is really burning fuel like there is no tomorrow.

Is there lots of black soot inside the tail pipe ? If so, it is running rich.

Hi i hope you can help me.

I bought an 02 reg fiesta freesyle in march last year. in august i curbed it on the passenger side and had to have a new front arm put on it and shock absorbers. since then my main beam headlights dont turn on wen driving as the stick you use to turn the beam on is a bit lose so u have to jam it forward to keep the beam on.

today i was driving and i realised my headlights had also stopped working. the mini dimmer lights work, the main beam still works but my main headlights i use for everyday driving are just not turning on.

i have recently started my own business and my income is non existent so taking it to a garage isnt an option for me atm. would anybody please be able to help or give advice?

    thanks

I have a 2001 Ford Fiesta Ghia. Do you know what oil it takes and how I get the engine oil cap off. It says just click click it ti the right butthis does nothing. It will not turn to the left?

  • #73

Jamie (Site Owner) (Tuesday, 19 April 2011 01:06)

    Hi Jez,

Sometimes the cap not coming off can be pressure inside the engine, however it is impossible to be over tightening as the cap prevents that by clicking instead of tightening further than necessary.

Basically, try to get it off again, by turning it to the left, but use all your strength.

As for the oil, I have to know what engine it has.

Any idea as to where I can get a l/h full door sill for a 1999 Mk4 5-door Ghia. There seem to be plenty of r/h full sills available on the internet but only left-hand skin sills. Also, would you have a very rough idea of how much it would cost to have a full sill fitted by a garage, excluding painting?

hi i own a ford fiesta ghia 1998 and car wont start was wondering could it be the timeing belt and if so would it of doing much damage to the car and it is worth getting it fixed

  • #83

Jamie (Site Owner) (Monday, 27 June 2011 00:13)

The only way it could possibly be the timing belt is if the car stalled the last time it was running. If you switched it off with the key, the belt couldn't have snapped, as it cannot snap stationary.

The first thing to look at would be the spark plugs, HT leads and distributor cap.

After that it would be the fuel pump.

I have a 2000 fiesta zetec ghia 1.25 petrol. I have intermittent speedometer problems. The speedometer flicks to max speed for a few seconds, then to zero for a few seconds and finally back to correct speed. When this occurs the radio makes an annoying crackling noise and if the head lights are on they go brighter (even on high beam!) This issue appears to happen randomly and its insanely annoying when the radio crackles and all i can do is turn the radio off and wait for it to finish its crackling fit. Is this a common problem? Ive read of similar problems on the focus of the same era, but I can find anything definitive on fiestas with the same problem. any hints or suggestions as to how to solve this problem would be appreciated?

Hi there! I am the proud owner of a p reg 1997 ford fiesta 1.4zetec Ghia X. Ive had it since 95k and fully serviced with the cam belt done on 95k too. 4 years later It has done 158k and still running like a dream. Although its had quite abit of welding done underneath but I have never know a fiesta with so many miles on! Apart from at the moment it tends to creep up towards the red or the letter "L" of the normal. The engine water is fine with coolant in and the engines topped up with oil. I am hoping it won't be anything too serious and only that the fan aint working! If anyone on here may know drop me a line on paulc1981@hotmail.co.uk but apart from that the little fezzi is a beast and still as smooth as when I first got her! Respect Ford!!

Drivers of Ford Fiesta Zetec Diesels might like to know that the tensioner pulley bearing broke causing the timing belt to skip and fail - luckily only a few valves were bent but it could have been disastrous. It still cost £770 to repair!!! The car is 06 registration and has done 52,000 miles - Ford recommend replacement for this model at 10 years or 150,000 miles. Other drivers might like to get their's changed sooner than that.

We where passengers in nathan stoney's car ^^ this is not spam we approached a U bend at 50mph and the brake pads where wet, therefore the ginger driver could not brake as hard as needed in precaution to not skidding, we hit the speed barrier and did a 720 (very fun) the driver the got slightly annoyed and shouted abuse at his car and then sadly physically asaulted his bonnet, which im sure upset Esta deeply your sincerely seth and ryan x

    Nice blog!. I've german fiesta mk4, july1996, 1.3/50hp;
I fixed IACV and speedo sensor problems, but now I have a trouble with the changed Master and Slave Cylinder's. Original Slave cylinder was with preload valve, but it's diskontinuitet, only LUK Brasil make it. Without preload valve it's a problem with the air intake in the slave cylinder. I want to instal the old Preload valve to the metal tube, immediately after the master cylinder. I think that will not overwhelm slave cylinder. Does someone tried something like that??

I have a problem with my Fiesta 1.8 diesel, year 2000.
The engine revs drop off to tick over and a warning light that looks like a coil comes on. I have to restart the engine and the problem is ok, until the next time it happens (more often now!).
The car also periodically revs. too high on tick over and I have to do the same, switch off the engine and restart.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem is? I suspect it could be the `fly by wire' throttle pedal. Does anyone have one they would like to sale to me? Thanks.

I have a 1996 Ford Fiesta, only 45K miles on clock and well looked after, but recently the engine cut out whilst I was changing gear up. The AA guy who eventually had to give me a tow home couldn't get it started - suggested it was electrical - possible fuse problem but basically no power going to engine from ignitition. My mechanic has been all over the fuse boxes, ignition etc., couldn't find an obvious fault. Then inexplicably the engine started again and seems to be ticking over. Have any other owners had this problem and did they find a diagnosable fault? Am worried about going out in it at the moment in case engine cuts out again in busy place.

My 86 year old mother has just stopped driving, so I bought her 1999 1.3 Fiesta. It is a great little car and has done less than 31,000 miles. She has only been averaging around 700 miles a year for the last 5 years (from the MOT records) and I do not know when the oil was last changed, so I plan to get it changed straight away, particularly as the tappets are a little noisy. My question is, should I give it an engine flush too, or is there a risk that it would dislodge cr*p that will do more harm than good?

"what is the newest fiesta/ka a 2001 1.25 zetec engine
will fit" To my knowledge, you should be able to make that engine run in even the latest Fiestas, however you would have to do a few modifications, though not extreme ones.

Hi all, can anyone tell me how to tell the difference between a mk2 fiesta and a mk 3? I only ask as a friend has one that the passenger door window has been broken on and are finding it difficult to get a replacement. It is a 1989 on an F plate 1.1 popular plus 3 dr and the door windows do not have a quarter light. Can anyone help?

Hi I have a 51 plate 1800 turbo diesel fiesta which has done 122000 miles. My garage has told me it has a cam chain but it could possibly do with having the belt changed that drives the water pump costing around £350. What belt would this be as I thought it would only have a fan belt and cam belt. Does this sound right? Thank you.

Hi there, I have a 2001 (51 plate) 3 door fiesta freestyle 1.25 zetec s engine, everything is all fine but I have a problem with the central locking. It's not remote c/l but when I try to lock my car, it's as if the handles go in (like it does when it locks) and then they come straight back out again. Anyone got any ideas as to why this could be happening and what I could do to fix it. I live literally opposite a ford dealership but begrudge taking it there coz i know it will cost me an arm and a leg to get it sorted. Many thanks :).

I have a fiesta freestyle 1.25 zetec engine 2001 model (51 plate) and the water heater hose has disconnected completely. Does anyone know what type of hose connector it is to fix it back on? Looked on euro car parts and there are 3 different types. Help :(

  • #205

    Rhys (Wednesday, 06 November 2013 21:01)

Hi Samantha, if you phone up euro car parts and give them your reg and say what you need, they will normally be able to tell you which one it is and give you a price, they will also deliver to your house as we'll I think. I work in the motor industry and euros are one of my best suppliers. I don't get involved with locking systems though so haven't got a clue about my own car :(

Hi everyone, I have a Ford Fiesta, Zetec 1.25, 2000. I have this problem of engine fire reducing on gear change. Example when I change from 1st to 2nd the car is unable to pull properly on the gear. The engine sound becomes heavier than normal. Furthermore I can hear clicking noise as when the gear level is higher than the momentum of the vehicle.

Absolutely frightening reading some of these comments. Advising that you should always have the correct amount of fuel in a tank? WTF is that all about?

Mechanical skills are not learned from reading articles about engines or watching Top Gear.

The most frightening comment so far is from the dude with the snapped cambelt. "It should be ok cos it was only idling"? "Can someone tell me how to time it up and change the belt"? Dude, go see a mechanic who knows what he's doing. People like you mesing with things they don't understand are the reason ebay is full of throwaway cars that people like me buy for pennies, spend a few quid on to repair and then drive them for years.

Hi, I own a very good condition 1989 MK3 Fiesta Popular with 34,000 miles on the clock from new, never fails to start up first key, and runs smoothly.

The problem I've got is that when I turn my heater on, settings 1 & 2 do not work, but setting 3 does for about 10-15 seconds before blowing the fuse. After reading up on this I believe that it may be the Blower Resistor. Can anybody confirm this and tell me where the Resistor is located on the MK3 Fiesta? Thanks.

I have not long ago just purchased a 1995 Mk 3 1600 SI Fiesta in very could condition, one owner from new, 82 K on the clock.Which i would like to keep for shows and a possible future antique.OK i know i have a few years to go before that happens, but it seems that the MK 3 is becoming rather scarce in numbers. They seem to rust from inside out. This one is rather good on that side.
    One little tip.
If you are finding it difficult to start your car in the mornings and your battery is getting on in years. If by any chance you can get hold of an old battery from a diesel Fiesta which has had its best day being in a diesel .Put it in the petrol Fiesta. They have plenty of juice left in them on a cold morning.I did it on my first fiesta SI and had no problems starting, or with the electrics. Ok I accept their could be other issues like Starter motor,or earthing issues. This is a cheap way of solving the issue and these battery's will last longer on a petrol car.

Hi, I have a 1998 fiesta Ghia 1.4. I have had her for nearly 2 years with good service history and since getting her with 73k she has now done 86k. I had clutch replaced about a year ago. Gears have felt a but crunchy for awhile and reverse has always been hard to get in. There is a hole in the exhaust (middle part) and today I have misjudged a reverse on a country lane and cracked rear light lens :( I was just wondering can I replaced the lens only or does it have to be the whole light, and is this easy enough to do without asking my mechanic. I am wondering is it time to get a new car or pay a few hundred quid to get her through the mot, as the mileage is still pretty good. I can also hear a rattling sound sometimes in low gears and the breaks don't feel as responsive these days. But I love my little Joni so much I think I would actually cry if I had to get a different car soon! Thanks

The best option is to take the car to a good scrap yard which is registered and verified by legal regulations. Otherwise there are chances that someone scraps the car at an unknown place without any regular bill.

I have a 2011 ford fiesta. It has 92,000 miles on it form trips to both coasts. I had driven to my brothers and was stopped at a wendy's. Saw steam from hood. turned it off . no lights came on until the steam, I opened hood, then slowly opened cap on radiator overflow, could not see, too dark out, smelled like antifreeze, antifreeze all over ground, lots of it, waited for it to cool, poured cold water about the amount of a normal sized bottle of water. waited a bit, turned the key it started and did not overheat. drove it about on mile to house, nephew says the radiator cap is the thermostat and to replace the cap. problem solved. True?

Daughters first car is a 1989 MK3 1.1l Ford Fiesta 3 door hatchback. It has 89000 miles on the clock MOT till October and when she bought it had 5 months tax on it which I renewed for her last month. Apart from fitting a new fan belt and still to replace the rocker cover gasked the car is running exceptionally well for its age. Although its the daughters car its know locally as 'Gandad's boy racer car'. Has a good turn of speed when required and is a totally different drive from my own brand new 63 registered Vauxhall Astra Tourer. Which one do I prefer to drive, the Fiesta of course. Maybe lacking in power compared to the Astra but so much more fun to drive, and you can drive it hard as well. The only item that I want to up grade at present is the dashboard to the SRI dashboard with the rev counter fitted as standard. Apart from that daughter says it must be kept as bog standard. I have however fitted a high level rear brake light for safety reasons.

Everything mechanical that's been stated here is a heap of crap and diesel having no power blah blah blah ... I'll have you know u can get a lot more power out of a diesel I just personally don't like them

I recently gained ownership of my great grandfathers ford fiesta mk3 26th May 1994. When we drive it forwards it jumps. My grandfather unfortunately has passed away I don't want to write the car off as there is too much sentimental value. What we would like to know is how much gear box fluid does it take?
